Setting The Scene

To meet the demands of changing customer behaviour, digital communication challenges, and the rapid growth of ecommerce parcel volumes, Evri’s sortation Hub in the Northwest needed to upgrade.

Evri partnered with L-A-C to improve efficiency and reliability. With a proven track record of successfully integrating systems in existing infrastructure without disrupting live operations.

Project “Flyer Van Automation” aimed to implement a material handling and sortation solution to cross dock loads from 120 vans per day.

It involved processing the traffic through a scanning and profiling system, automatic induction onto a cross belt sorter and then onto 38 dispatch boom conveyors resulting in a throughput of 5,000 parcels per hour.

The Challenge

In today’s fast-paced logistics industry, efficient parcel sorting is critical for ensuring timely delivery and customer satisfaction. As Evri’s operational requirements grew, they naturally faced challenges in meeting their commitments due to their limitations in handling large volumes and diverse parcel types.

The existing operations were highly labour dependent and the entire unloading, inbound, sortation and dispatch was carried out using manually hauled cages. The labour challenge also introduced systematic errors of parcel damages, inaccurate sortation, and wrong dispatches.

This led them to partner with L-A-C Logistics Automation for a project aimed at addressing these challenges and optimizing their parcel sorting process.

Real-time parcel traceability & visibility

The Solution

The solution designed and deployed by L-A-C utilised a network of conveyors, switches, divertors and high-speed profiling system. The 350 metres of high load Post and Parcel conveyors were designed specifically to meet the rigorous demands and standards of the express logistics and parcel courier industry.

In case of oversized parcels that could not be processed by the system, the sorter could reject the parcel using designated reject areas or by stopping the infeed and waiting for an operator to manually remove it.

Once the scanning system obtained the identity and volume of the parcel, the system indexed the parcel onto the automatic sorter. Parcels are sorted into 38 destinations based on barcode information, ensuring precise routing.

The Solution consisted of:

5-sided camera scanning tower with volumetric dimensioning, weighing & scanning technology used to determine parcel destination
High Speed infeed conveyors – Parcels, bags and cartons loaded manually direct from vans
The system utilized an API (Application Programming Interface) to call for real-time verification and routing decisions, ensuring accurate and efficient sorting of parcels
Belt conveyors inclined and horizontal for internal parcel conveyance
Infeed conveyors were equipped with gapping belts to ensure correct gapping of parcels was maintained

Evri teamed up with L-A-C to boost their efficiency and reliability game. L-A-C has a solid track record of integrating systems into existing infrastructure without messing up live operations.

The Benefits

The implementation of the end-to-end automation system streamlined hub operations and delivered productivity gains. It reduced manual labour errors, ensuring accurate and efficient sorting of parcels.

The traffic management provided a continuous parcel flow thus increasing the facility’s throughputs to 5000 parcels per hour. Real-time integration of the scanning systems, sorters and inhouse warehouse management systems (WMS) provided complete parcel traceability & visibility.

Overall, the throughput was doubled, and workforce was reduced to half, thus reducing the operational costs. The system helped Evri quadruple its productivity & operational performance.
